Project Overview

ROMP is an organization connecting the larger recovery community through meaningful outdoor experiences. They provide a space for people in all recovery lifestyles to connect with each other at events hosted by the users themselves and organizations within the recovery community. My role in this project was to create a branding and visual design system within their app as well as throughout other touchpoints. I also restructured their existing application prototype and proposed a new user flow and overall experience.

The Goal

Recovery from addiction in all its many forms is no easy task. New habits, skills, and often times a completely new perspective in one's life are needed for long-term sobriety. Most individuals looking to recover are directed to 12 step support groups to facilitate these changes. And although these groups are extremely important to a successful sober lifestyle, it's how one spends their time outside of these meetings that will have a lasting impact on themselves and their community. Research shows that individuals suffering from mood and emotional disturbances can be lifted by spending more time outdoors. How might we facilitate a safe space to encourage those in recovery to connect with each other and achieve their goals in outdoor spaces?

Execution

The outcome is an events app where users can post events and share with those in their sober network. Users can set goals for various activities, attend ROMP sponsored retreats, and meet other sober individuals while traveling through different parts of the world.

Branding

The approach to ROMP's branding was to rely on the feeling of adventure and visual imagery of outdoor navigation. Navigation as a visual cue was a response to the organization's focus on individuals often new in recovery or on a life-long journey in a sober world. Visual inspiration is taken from topographical and hiking maps, national park signage, and outdoor color palettes.

Research

The first phase of research involved talking to potential users to see what aspects of recovery were most important to them, and how they experienced recovery in their day to day lives. A competitive analysis was conducted to determine what unique opportunities were available for a digital product in ROMP's market. An empathy map was developed and a redesign of their current flow along with additional features was proposed.

Ideation

After an overall flow and sense of the user was established, I began sketching lo-fi wireframes.

Onboarding

A simple onboarding flow was developed to quickly get users engaged with content that they found useful. Users provide a minimal amount of profile information to ensure a certain level of anonymity which can be expanded by the user at a later time. Interests are chosen to target specific content for each individual user.

Connections

The connections page is split into three main features. In addition to a usual list of contacts, a feed was implemented to follow what your connections are up to on a daily basis. The travelers feature helps to solve the problem of disconnection that users in our target group can often encounter when traveling alone. Since most social interactions with new people in new cities can often involve alcohol, the travelers feature allows users in a new city to connect with other folks in recovery in all parts of the world.

Creating Events

Users can create new events with specific tags to better guide other users to the content that they are most interested in. With our target user being individuals with mental health and addiction issues, it was important to include accessibility features when creating events such as ASL and wheelchair access. This set of users often fall into a group of individuals that need these type of services.
